The New Moon Urges us all to Begin Again

With the recent announcements on the extended home learning, ‘stay-at-home’ expectations, and the post-Covid-19 rollout beginning in May, the New Moon could not have come at a better time.  We all need a fresh start– wipe the slate clean of all the unwanted and begin again. The Universe works in an extraordinary way, and on April 22nd at 9:45 PM the sky will be dark urging us all to begin again. The New Moon or Dark Moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle; the perfect time to clear away the old, set new intentions, plan new beginnings and become motivated to plant new seeds.

Sage Burning

Sage kills bacteria in the air (up to 94% of airborne bacteria in a space and disinfect the air).  A Native American tradition touching on psychological, spiritual and physical levels. Burning sage in a space clears the negative energy (bacteria) to generate wisdom, clarity and promote healing. – perfect for new beginnings.

  • Open doors and windows
  • Burn a candle
  • set an intention
  • light the sage (blow it out so the embers are glowing)
  • place the bundle of dried sage in a ceramic dish/bowl (I use a seashell)
  • walk slowly through your house, wafting the smoke in all directions

A new moon is a great time to reinvigorate YOU! Time to restart yourself and give your body an opportunity to start again.

  • If you drink, take a few days off during this week and replace it with extra water.
  • On the day of a new moon, eat a Whole Food Plant Based Diet
  •  A Detox Bath is very intentional; cleansing the body of toxins that have built up in img_7545the last lunar cycle.
    • 1/2c Epsom salt
    • 1/4 baking Soda
    • 3 drops each of peppermint, lemon and lavender essential oils. Soak for 20 minutes

Practice Grounding

Grounding aids in helping you become aware of your external and pulling your mind out of memories and more inward and in the moment.  The purpose is to become present which is great for moments of anxiety, depressions, PTSD, quiet the noise in your mind. Some easy ways to do this include, but are not limited to…

get outside

  • take a walk
  • go barefoot
  • breathing (pranayama practices)
  • sit and listen
  • 5-4-3-2-1 method
  • burn candles
  • meditate

Write out intentions/ wishes/ vision board

You can’t start new without reflecting on the old, clearing out what hasn’t been working for you and planting seeds for new behaviors, new goals, and new ideas. Research says that writing down your goals can improve your focus and stay on track. Another great habit is to share them with someone- say your wishes out loud.

Organize/clear clutter/rearrange

Since this is a new beginning, it is time to clear out what is not benefitting you, clogging the front door or stacking on the stairs. Spring Cleaning does not need to wait until Spring.Capture

  • Clearing out a closet, your meditation space or your workspace is a great way to reset.
  • Toss, upcycle or get rid of anything you are done with to allow space for your new intentions.
  • rotate your houseplants to face a new direction
  • Wash your comforters, couch covers, blankets, curtains, bath mats etc..

According to happify (the science behind gratitude), the benefits of practicing gratitude are endless.  People who have a gratitude practice are more positive, feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness and even have a stronger immune system.

  •  Write out your longest list of gratitude
  • If you are creating a jar of gratitude each month- pull these out and read them aloud to the Universe or with your family.
  • Share what you are grateful for with friends, family
  • Write a letter to yourself or to friends giving thanks

On April 22nd, I will be sharing my New Moon Ritual with my friends.  Hopefully, they will let me take photos and film the quick yoga practice and some of our time together.  Stay tuned for a YOUTUBE update on our practices on the 23rd at Bloom With Aubrey.                           we will be practicing our state’s social distancing expectations.
